{"id":898,"date":"2018-12-11T00:35:35","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T06:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thespectaclstg.wpengine.com\/?p=898"},"modified":"2019-06-10T17:38:38","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T22:38:38","slug":"poetry-by-khaty-xiong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thespectacle.wustl.edu\/?p=898","title":{"rendered":"Poetry by Khaty Xiong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"single-box clearfix entry-content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<div class=\"poemscroll\" ;=\"\" style=\"font-family: Georgia; font-size: 90%; min-width: 700px;  padding-left: 10px;\">\n<h4>Tapestry<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div style=\"width: 300px; margin: 0 50px 0 0; float:left;\">\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In the light of my room my shadow<br \/>\nIts floral patterns imprinted on my shapes<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Of my insides<br \/>\nA secret window leading into a garden<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; ranging songs accidental\u2014<br \/>\nAnd my sadness thinner.<br \/>\nOf my knee and the year<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Into the cloisters of these<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The tiles beneath are<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In repeat since the first deaths.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;And wondrous hues<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I will never be beautiful.<br \/>\nCloister of traps.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Which are again<br \/>\nDelicate designs.<br \/>\nI am taller. A blue flower<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The year familiar as peering<br \/>\nBacksplash tiles with text<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;And I am flourishing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width:300px; padding:0 0px 0 0; float:left;\">\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Now a part of the faded tapestry<br \/>\nRevealing the monolithic halls<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Which could never be lit unless<br \/>\nRumored to flourish\u2014<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Regardless I am taller<br \/>\nA blue flower at the clip<br \/>\nHas disappeared again<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Delicate designs\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A coagulated red that I have seen<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Familiar as the greens pinks<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Of mother\u2019s garden.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In the light of my room.<br \/>\nMy insides a set of halls<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Mother and father\u2019s<br \/>\nUninviting. Regardless<br \/>\nAt the clip of my knee.<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Into a garden window<br \/>\nThat reads <em>upon the wondrous hues.<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In the light of my room.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Abundance<\/h4>\n<p>The deer came home with questions<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; budding on their sleeves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Who tamed the birds<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; to stop preening<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; for hellish praise?<\/p>\n<p>Whose mother was it<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;who whipped her crown<br \/>\nupon the steering wheel<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; on North and Valentine?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Whose mouth<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; was whiter than stone?<\/p>\n<p>The glass turned back into sand.<br \/>\nThe sand turned its back from the body.<\/p>\n<p>From above, a whisper of the scene\u2014<\/p>\n<p>A woman in the yard adoring all the hanging pears\u2014<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; her hands on their bellies<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; yellowing<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; swelling right before her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Altar Call<\/h4>\n<p>Way above the ashes mother is assembling in the field.<br \/>\nA poor hut for light of judgement. An eschewing door.<\/p>\n<p>Returning in this blemish brother leaping into the air<br \/>\nand trapped.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Father not yet entering the view\u2014<\/p>\n<p>The whereabouts of uncle Nyiaj still unknown<br \/>\nwhich must be peaceful. The vocal chords in pieces.<\/p>\n<p>And what of cousin Maiv in her batik dress<br \/>\nflying through the cellars?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Upon the altar I lay my only gift\u2014<\/p>\n<p>One iron egg in the mouth of a tiger.<br \/>\nSnakes in ashen script. The days.<br \/>\nMisfit tapestries sold by the yard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<hr>\n<p>Khaty Xiong is a Hmong American poet from Fresno, CA. She is the author of <em>Poor Anima<\/em> (Apogee Press, 2015) and three poetry chapbooks: <em>Ode to the Far Shore<\/em> (Platypus Press, 2016), <em>Deer Hour<\/em> (New Michigan Press, 2014), and <em>Elegies<\/em> (University of Montana, 2013). She has received a fellowship from MacDowell Colony and a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.
