My mother feeds the starlings,<br \/>\nBut death grows. Vicodin and fire<br \/>\nEscape. Uptown the village<br \/>\nTurns to plastic. Candy clouds dress strollers<br \/>\nIn death. All the people pushed. Light just<br \/>\nRazed it. <\/p>\n<p>It was the middle of the end,<br \/>\nA story about to move.<br \/>\nTeeth past holes, disaster pickled.<br \/>\nI cannot afford it: loving home,<br \/>\nA block and a bic.<br \/>\nMy throat hurt her belly, that I sang.<br \/>\nThere is no place left, the memory<br \/>\nA calamity box. <\/p>\n<p>And it is night, the shell breaks . . .<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Candy smoke<\/h4>\n<p>Nothing but blood coating the city<br \/>\nWorld, I shut and wobbled. Slow-going.<br \/>\nSelf-steeped. A black cat<br \/>\nLicked the pavement. I wanted to think<br \/>\nIt didn&#8217;t miss its ear, or that water under-<br \/>\nDulled the sloe engine.<br \/>\nLight slugged closed in oranges.<br \/>\nGarbage garage, what sound dropped<br \/>\nInto: beautiful bubbling skin the sky did scar.<br \/>\nOnce that water was the cream.<br \/>\nTires rubbed their skin against the street.<br \/>\nI wanted the floodless<br \/>\nFoodless animal, to be sleep&#8217;s tack,<br \/>\nSo pressed. Halogen slurry.<br \/>\nThe leg under the name of the loved.<br \/>\nSinking was sight how I rode. Each pull<br \/>\nWas alone: loved\u2014but seared light\u2014to thicken<br \/>\nLuck. When a claw entered a god gull.<br \/>\nA knot of hair hung lowly behind it. The drug<br \/>\nTurned the animal into another. I try<br \/>\nTo unarch this, the fold made secret by so telling.<br \/>\nIts death\u2014god&#8217;s\u2014silvered in the median.<br \/>\nI wanted to be one of the men, hanging<br \/>\nThere, listening for mine hunger so to fall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Disaster<\/h4>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n1.<\/p>\n<p>I have lodged an arm.<br \/>\nClimb up. (And bend to block the day.)<br \/>\nFringe and lint cling: I smoke it,<br \/>\n     smoke it. Become girl that girl<br \/>\n     eats, that color on the wall or color<br \/>\n     thrown down to starve towards.<br \/>\n(On the street, which lay a storm.)<br \/>\nLint bubbles where static tops<br \/>\n     the thought of.<br \/>\n     (And ten kiss to stop the light.)<br \/>\nThe memory&#8217;s chopped and screwed.<br \/>\nI flint across time&#8217;s face.<\/p>\n<p>2.<\/p>\n<p>The room is a garden I am not inside in.<br \/>\nStable topped up with dust.<br \/>\n     It&#8217;s an accident.<br \/>\n     Spin the bottle.<br \/>\n(Paper bag on long black hair,<br \/>\n     what summer heat&#8217;s tied back from.)<\/p>\n<p>3.<\/p>\n<p>I ask for a fire.<br \/>\nShe brings her burnt shirts.<br \/>\nI smell disaster on the pink water, disaster on<br \/>\n     the water bed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Anne Marie Rooney is the author of <em>Spitshine<\/em> (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2012), as well as two chapbooks.
